Modern Conveniences

All that we behold is full of blessings.
William Wordsworth

From the time my alarm goes off in the morning to my last conscious act of the day—which is flipping on a fan next to my bed because I love me some white noiseI am grateful for modern conveniences. They make life better.

I love being able to blur the difference between night and day with a little incandescent magic. I love listening to whatever music I want in my house, in my car, in my ear buds. I love staying in touch with people far away.

I love my appliances.

I love indoor plumbing and being able to access hot water whenever I want. I love cleaning products that have superpowers. I love my wheat grinder and ice maker. I love my toaster and my Kitchenaid.

I love Google maps.

I love airplane travel and high speed internet and automatic transmission.  I love being able to put books on hold at the library from my laptop. I love texting Jill across the street because that’s way too far to walk. I love being able to flip a switch and watch my gas fireplace flare into action.

I love my iPhone.

I love my furnace and the thermostat that regulates the temperature without me having to think about it. I love fountain drinks. I love disposable paint rollers, disposable diapers, disposable napkins and paper plates.

I love digital cameras. I love sticking Adam and Braeden’s dress shirts in the dryer for a quick tumble instead of ironing them. I love drive-thrus. I love my vacuum.

I love antibiotics and allergy medicine.

I love the NICU that saved my niece’s and nephew’s lives. I love insulin that keeps my brother alive. I love vaccines.

I love most of those things too. What would I ever do without Google Maps? Get lost, that's what.
By the way, I saw that you went to BYU (me too). Did you by any chance have any classes from Louise Plummer?

Yes I did! She was my favorite teacher.

Ha! I knew it. When I saw your name was Thelma I knew it had to be you. I was reading her blog and she mentioned she had only ever had one student named Thelma and you're her. That makes you kind of famous, you know.

She also mentioned that you were memorable not only for your name but because you were a great writer as well. I concur.

I'm so happy to have found your blog.
